The fair arrives

The annual May Fair takes place in the area around Shepherd Market, gifting the neighbourhood the name that’s now known and recognised around the world.

1720s

The Georgian framework

Brook Street and New Bond Street take shape as Mayfair grows westward. Grand street frontages, intimate courts and cobbled mews begin to establish the area's distinctive look and rhythm.

1723

Handel at Brook Street

George Frederic Handel made 25 Brook Street his home for 36 years, composing both Messiah and Zadok the Priest here, unique masterpieces still performed at every coronation.

1784

Bond Street rises to prominence

Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, draws London's high society to New Bond Street, establishing it as the city's premier luxury destination — a role it continues to hold today.

1968

Hendrix next door

In the swinging sixties Jimi Hendrix moves into 23 Brook Street, the flat next to Handel's former home. Made high by the history, Jimi immediately goes out and scores copies of Messiah and Water Music. Two musical eras, one remarkable address.
